- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup water
- 1 Tablespoon pure vanilla extract, vanilla bean paste or 1 whole vanilla bean
Option 1: With pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste:
Place the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium high heat. Turn heat down to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes, until all the sugar dissolves. Remove the mixture of sugar and water from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste. Cool to room temperature. Place into an airtight container like a mason jar for storage.
Option 2: With a whole vanilla pod:
Split the fresh vanilla bean pod in half, lengthwise, leaving one end intact. Place the sugar, water, and vanilla bean in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Turn heat down to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes, until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Place the homemade vanilla bean syrup into an airtight container for storage.
- Boil the syrup a little longer for a thicker syrup.
